A while back I wrote a staff recommendation at the bookstore for a small new paperback volume of Charles Burns’ digital snapshot diptychs, called One Eye. The combinations are pretty marvelous, and it’s great to see compelling work produced in a lo-res and non-overblown manner. There is much good to be said for these boxes inhabitated by saturated hues, depictions of manufactured objects, urban (and non) landscapes, rephotographed sculpture/ paintings/ drawings, black-and-white matched with color, cobbled hybrid creatures, and wistful, longwinded titles. A thoughtful write-up (by Chris Ware) of Burns’ photo work and several images from the series appear here.
Some self-made cell phone and/or digital photography in the diptych vein are to follow.
